Islamic Failure Series – Episode 34 – Abu Lahab

This is one of the most ridiculous Surahs of Quran. Basically Allah is cursing a man called Abu Lahab, which happens to be the uncle of Muhammad, and his wife, simply because they didn’t believe in Muhammad’s prophecy, and opposed him! This is taken from the Islamic maintained page of Wikipedia. Click on the link for further details and explanation (i.e. if you want more crap for further reading, but I’m not responsible for any damage to your neurons. I warned you!) (Arabic: سورة المسد‎, meaning “The Father of Flame”) is the 111th chapter (Sura) of the Quran with 5 verses. Verse 1 mentions one of Muhammad’s adversaries named Abu Lahab.[1] This surah takes its name from verse 5 in which the phrase “ḥablun min masad” (meaning “a rope of palm fibre”) occurs that mentions the PALM FIBRE rope that in Hellfire shall be twisted around the neck of the wife of the Prophet’s uncle, who bitterly opposed Islam; for she took great pride in wearing an ostentatious necklace she became known for and would slip by night to strew thorns and prickly plants in the Prophet’s path to injure his feet
Here is the full Surah (it is very short)

May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he
His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained
He will [enter to] burn in a Fire of [blazing] flame
And his wife [as well] – the carrier of firewood
Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fiber

The below meme was originally shared by my Arab atheist friend on another social network and it says:

Believe it or not! The presumed creator of this neat and complex galaxy, is the same god who put his head against Abu Lahab cursing and insulting him, and dedicating a whole quranic Surah for him

About Mike

Hello, I am an atheist because of reason and personal experience. I am a father of THREE lovely living kids and two dead embryos, married to a lovely Christian Catholic devoted woman. Yes, black and white can coexist as long as there is respect and love, which is something abstracted from any belief or religion. I do not claim absolute truth and not 100% sure that a God does not exist somewhere out there. The scientific method is what I use to connect to reality. If there is something I don't understand, then it is because i don't understand, not because god exists. In case you haven't noticed, I am a native Arab, and English is my third language (yes there is second language). I like reading the Bible and the Quran and the critics of both of them. I also love watching documentaries especially astronomy, cosmology, Quantum Physics, and new discoveries in science in general, and Physics in particular.
