Islamic failure series – Episode 23 – Merciful Quran
Some people might not believe Muslims when they claim that there are good teachings and good moral values in Islam and their holy book: the Quran. Indeed, the following is, seriously, a beautiful verse from Quran that teaches Muslims, how Allah teaches the Israelis how he (Allah) considers the killing of one human being as if that person (the killer) had killed the whole humanity, and he who saves a life, is as if he had saved the entire humanity. These are indeed deep and profound words that I agree with and love.
(Al-Maeda 5:32, Arabic – Original)
Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.
(Al-Maeda 5:32, English – Sahih International)
But my admiration of the beauty of these words (even though I disagree with killing in general even for a good reason, but this is just my personal view) are quickly destroyed by the verse right after!!!
(Al-Maeda 5:33, Arabic – Original)
Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment,
(Al-Maeda 5:33, English – Sahih International)
Of course, in this verse, Quran is not telling people to go and kill for no reason, I do acknowledge that, but again to punish people by death if they fight against Muhammad or Allah by killing them? And how? Crucifixion, cutting off their hands and feet! And not only they would suffer this cruel penalty, but a great punishment is awaiting for them even in the afterlife! Wow, isn’t that merciful?
You might say that this is justice for those who go against Allah and Muhammad, but if this was true, then the previous verse wasn’t talking about saving anyhuman being, rather than saving a particular human being, a believer! And killing a human being wasn’t talking about any human being, rather than a believer. Doesn’t this imply that the life of a disbeliever is not worth much?
